When you think about science, technology, engineering and mathematics, you might summon an image of fighter jets doing Mach 1 or an astronaut doing a space walk. But did you know that roller skating has had a huge impact on Oklahoma’s STEM programs?
It’s true! And at Skate Moore, we’ve made the extra effort to ensure your kids are getting the STEM experience they need to become the nation’s next leaders in innovation!
Skating is all about physics. Understanding the hows and whys of skating can give your kids some really great insights into the fundamentals of matter in motion. Getting from point A to point B might seem like a no brainer but there’s a lot going on under the radar to make it happen.
Rolling, Pushing and Turning; It’s All Physics!
When you push off with your wheels and start rolling forward, the backward thrust of the push is what sets you in motion. Your wheels and bearing reduce friction allowing you to roll. The smoother the surface, the less resistance your skates have to deal with which means you’ll go even farther and even faster the smoother the surface is.
In physics this is called the law of momentum, which states that an object in motion will stay in motion until an outside force causes it to slow down or stop. In this case, you can think about your breaks as that outside force. At Skate Moore, out polished hardwood roller rink is so perfect for gliding on wheels that you’re liable to keep going forever if you don’t have breaks. Your breaks create friction and slow your momentum.
Proudly Supporting National STEM Day
National STEM day is coming up quick and on November 8th, we’ll be celebrating all the amazing things science continues to bring to us as a society. Come down and join us at Skate Moore to learn more about how your kids can get involved!
