Before You Get Rolling, Stop and Stretch

December 27, 2016 by TaylorB Leave a Comment

girl stretching outside - splitsIf you’re planning to get more active for the New Year, Skate Moore can help. Staying healthy doesn’t have to mean kale salads and trips to the gym before the sun is up. You can get fit and have fun, whether you’re working out alone or getting the whole family up off the couch. Want to take your skate fitness to the next level? Prepare for a skating workout with these stretches.

3 Great Skate Stretches

Warming up your muscles before you skate will help you get a better workout and minimize your risk of injuries. Ready to roll?

  • Quad stretch. Quadriceps are the muscles that run along the front of your thigh. These are a big reason you can propel yourself forward while you skate! To stretch your quads, stand with one foot flat on the ground, and hold your other foot by the ankle. Pull up until you feel your quad muscle stretching. If you need to hold onto the wall for balance, that’s fine. Just make sure you don’t overextend your muscle. If it hurts, it’s time to stop!
  • Calf and hamstring stretch. Now it’s time to stretch the back of your leg. Simply anchor your heel a few feet in front of you, then lean over and grab your toe. Slowly flex your ankle so your toe moves toward your body. If you’re not feeling the stretch, scoot your foot out until you do.
  • Hip stretch. Skating is low impact workout that’s great because it doesn’t strain your joints. But if you have tight hips, the Seated Pigeon stretch makes a big difference. Sit on the floor and bend your knees, feet flat. Put your hands behind you for balance and place the ankle of one foot over the opposite knee. Press your hips toward your heel until you feel the stretch. When you feel good and loose, it’s time to switch legs!

Make your next skating workout count. Visit Skate Moore for holiday fun and family-friendly fitness in Moore, OK.

All I Want for Christmas Is Skates

December 12, 2016 by TaylorB Leave a Comment

teen girl with gift box

This holiday season, we’re letting the good times roll! Gift cards are an awesome present, but there’s something about unwrapping a package on Christmas morning that makes the holidays magical. Christmas roller-skates aren’t just a great gift for skaters who want to save on rental skates. They’re also the perfect present for skaters who need an upgrade.

Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Skates

Owning roller-skates means the perfect fit, customizable gear, and fun whenever you want. And if you take care of your skates, they can last for years. But there’s nothing worse than suffering through a pair of worn out skates. Check for these signs your skates need replacing.

  1. They don’t fit. Kids outgrow their roller-skates fast. If your child complains of pinched toes every time he or she hits the skating floor, it’s probably time to pass down those skates and invest in a new pair.
  2. The lining has broken down. The more you wear your skates, the better they’ll conform to your foot. But some people are such avid skaters that they break down the boot lining. If your heel aches from a threadbare foot cushion, it may be time for a new pair of skates.
  3. The boot is old. Skate boots are well-made and can last your child years. But just like any shoe, they reach a point where they’re no longer supportive or comfortable. If the boot is warped, cracked, or no longer fits your foot, it’s time to replace those skates.
  4. You’ve moved on. We carry specialty skates for better speed, more maneuverability, and specific skating sports like roller-derby. If you’re serious about derby skating, artistic skating, or speed skating, buy a pair of skates designed to help you achieve skating greatness.

Skate Moore offers 20% off our entire skate stock for the month of December! It’s the perfect time to upgrade your skates. To shop for new roller-skates, visit our Moore, OK skating center during our holiday hours.

Warm Up Before You Roll

December 2, 2016 by gmg Leave a Comment

socks on feetRoller skating is great exercise! And just like with any other type of exercise, it’s important to warm up and stretch before you hit the rink. If you’re new to skating, it’s important to get your balance on skates, and stretching and warming up can help.

The following exercises and stretches are designed to help you get ready. Make sure you do these stretches for roller skating on a regular basis to improve your skating skills!

  • March in place: Before you stretch, do a little marching in place. Get your knees up in order to get your heart rate up. You can take this to a light run in place if you’d like.
  • Side lunges: To warm up your thighs (which work hard when you skate) do some side lunges. Step to the side and bend down to a squat. Step just wider than your shoulders. Go from side to side several times to really stretch those muscles.
  • Glute stretch: One great stretch for your legs is the figure four stretch. Bend your knees and put all of your weight on your right foot. Then cross your left foot over your right quad (above your knee). Sink back into the stretch to really stretch out your hip and glute. Repeat on the other side.
  • Balance: This stretch will improve your skating balance. Bend your right knee and pick up your left foot. Lean forward. Balance on one foot as long as possible. Repeat on the other leg.
  • Standing hamstring stretch: While standing, bend forward at the waist with legs relatively straight (a small bend in the knees is good for those with back problems). Reach towards your toes until you feel a stretch in your hamstrings.

Now you’re ready to skate. We’ll see you at Skate Moore!

Thank You to Our Customers

November 23, 2016 by Zach Sanders Leave a Comment

We are growing ever-nearer to Thanksgiving, and already we detect the scent of feasts being prepared.thank you
This season isn’t just about the dishes placed before us at the table though, it’s a time to reflect on our lives and what we are truly thankful for. This characteristic of the holiday is, in our opinion, just as important for businesses to ponder as it is for individuals. That being said, we want to take some time before the hustle and bustles of Thanksgiving day to write down what it is that we are all thankful for here at Skate Moore Skate Center!

  • First and foremost, without our patrons coming to skate week in and week out, we would not exist. We thank each and every one of you, from those who have visited us once to our regulars.
  • The energy you all bring! A rink is really just a wood floor without its skaters. The energy you bring to this place breathes life into what would otherwise just be another building.
  • Roller skating, of course! It’s hard to consider now, but there was once a point in time when roller skating did not exist! We are so thankful to live in a time when it does and to exist during a point in its history when roller skating is so advanced. There aren’t many things in this world we can say we love more than roller skating and most everything else is a distant second.

We hope your holiday is filled with laughter and love this year! We welcome you to come visit us after Thanksgiving is over this year to skate off the inevitable extra calorie or two. Happy Thanksgiving!

Find Out Which Skate Best Suites Your Style!

October 28, 2016 by Zach Sanders Leave a Comment

If you have spent any amount of time in the rink, you’ll know one thing for certain. Everyone has their own way of roller skating. Some like to cruise and take a leisurely glide around the rink, while others enjoy something that looks more like jam skating. Even taking stock of everyone on the rink floor excludes skaters who enjoy skating on the street or elsewhere. Taking all of these different approaches to skating into account, it is important to realize that some skates are better than others depending on what your skating journey might be. But how do you choose? Skate Moore, located in Moore, OK, is here to help. Find out which skate best suites you in this week’s post!

Quad Skate

  • The quad skate is what many avid rink goers gravitate to.
  • Need a little more stability? This is the skate for you! The way the 4 wheels are situated on the skate makes for a wider grip on the ground.
  • Is cruising your thing? Quad skate are not built for the speed that an inline skate is. So if jamming around the rink is what your after, then look no further than quad skates.
  • If your ankles need a little more support during physical activity, the quad may not offer what you need.

Inline Skate

  • If you feel the need for speed, inline skates might be what you need! Inline skate are used in speed competitions because of their more stream-line design.
  • If you are the kind of person who needs to feel the sun on your face, inline skates are better suited for outdoor fun. they are great for roller hockey and skating on a bumpier surface.
  • Need support for your ankles? Inline skates are made of plastic that comes up higher on your leg than a quad skate does.
  • While inline skates are easy to get the hang of if you practice enough, they do tend to be a little less stable than a quad skate. If stability is something you need, inlines might not be for you.

Are you looking to hit the rink sometime soon? Check out our hours and plan your next visit!
