volunteer

With the holidays upon us here in Moore, Oklahoma, it’s time to start thinking about how you and your family can give back to the community this year. At Skate Moore, we love our neighbors and hope all of our skating friends will consider helping out those in need during the season of giving.

There are tons of fun and rewarding ways to help your neighbor that will make a big impact. At Skate Moore, we thought it would be helpful if we gave you a short list of some of our favorite ways to give this year. Volunteering is a great way to help out and to teach your kids a valuable lesson about caring for our local community. Check out our list below and then roll by for a skating session to reward your little ones for doing the right thing!

  • Volunteer with a Food Drive – Food drives are a great way to get the community involved in feeding the homeless and less fortunate among us. From collecting nonperishable food items to helping deliver the collections, there are lots of ways to get involved. Give us a call at Skate Moore to find out more!
  • Help Save the Planet – Recycling goes a long way to help save resources and make our planet a better place to live. Make it fun by creating decorative boxes for recycling old batteries, electronics and other things that can be reused but aren’t picked up on trash day. Drop off the bins at local stores and pick them up when they’re full! You’ll be helping to teach your kids to be active in helping our environment while doing your part to create a cleaner earth.
  • Join Us for a PTA Skate – Getting involved with your school’s PTA night at Skate Moore is a great way to help raise money for your child’s education and have some fun while you’re at it. Check out our PTA page to see when you’re school is scheduled and give us a call to find out more!

Celebrate National STEM Day at Skate Moore!

October 30, 2017 by Writers Leave a Comment

roller skatingRoller skating allows STEM education to finally get the recognition it deserves – from kids as well as educators! Want to spark your kids’ curiosity? Celebrate STEM by bringing the family to Skate Moore on November 8th! Race around the rink with your kids, eat delicious food, and make memories that will last a lifetime.

Discover what STEM is, why it’s important, and how STEM and roller skating correlate!

What is STEM?

STEM is an acronym for science, technology, engineering, and math. Beyond its technical definition, STEM is about the principles that govern our everyday life – including fun activities such as roller skating! When you roller skate, you tap into different elements of STEM such as friction, motion, gravity, and design. Your kids can learn about physical fitness, the science of skating, the engineering that went into designing and building the rink, and so much more.

Why is it important for kids to learn about STEM?

In our world, careers in the sciences are on the rise. When your kids learn about STEM and how it affects their everyday life, they will better understand these subjects. It may even spark a lifelong curiosity that will lead them to a career in STEM! STEM helps kids learn more about the world around them. And STEM + skating shows them that educational experiences can be fun!

How does roller skating connect with STEM?

Roller skating is more than pushing off your feet and gliding around the rink. Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics makes roller skating possible! With friction, velocity, acceleration, and force, your roller skates are able to push you around the rink. And technology and engineering are the cornerstones of designing roller-skates. Skating isn’t just great exercise – it’s a learning opportunity!

Scary Health Facts About Halloween Candy

October 19, 2017 by Writers Leave a Comment

halloween candy

Halloween is big fun for the kids but the amount of sugar and empty calories we let our kids consume can be scarier than any ghost or ghoul you might run into on All Hallows Eve. Did you know that there are over 40 million kids between 5- and 14-years old who participate in trick or treating every year? And as fun as it is to conceal your kiddos in creepy costumes to collect buckets full of candy, all that junk food can wreak havoc on your kid’s health.

The average trick or treater collects anywhere between 3,500 to 7,000 calories worth of candy every year on Halloween! And when you consider the fact that it takes more than 15 minutes of moderate cardiovascular exercise to burn off a single bite-sized piece, one thing come to mind; it’s time to get your kids into some fun activities that can give them the extra exercise they need this time of year.

Here at Skate Moore in Oklahoma City, we have just the solution! Roller skating is a great way to burn off that extra sugar while letting your kids have a really great time! A lot of people don’t realize how good skating is for you because it is so much fun. However, the benefits of skating are huge! Check out just a few of them below:

Increased Heart Rate – Skating at a moderate pace increases your heart rate into the fat-burning range of 140-180 beats per minute.

Burn Calories – Spending an hour at our skating center in Moore, Oklahoma, can burn between 300-600 calories.

Complete Aerobic Exercise – Skating works muscles from your head to your toes, giving you a full-body workout.

Bones and Joints – Unlike running and other cardio workouts, skating is easy on your joints. This gives you the workout you need with much less risk of injury.

There are probably a million more benefits that come from skating beyond simply having fun. We’d be more than happy to discuss them all with you during our open skating times here at Skate Moore! Or, feel free to organize a big trip for the whole neighborhood with our awesome party packages! Curious to find out more? Give us a call today at (405) 794-4644.

Celebrate National Roller Skating Month

October 5, 2017 by Writers Leave a Comment

Roller skating in roller rink

October is National Roller Skating Month and here at Skate Moore in Oklahoma City, we thought it would be fun to give you a little rundown on the history and evolution of skating! Did you know that the first time roller skates were ever seen was all the way back in 1760? That’s over 250 years ago! And while the initial design did not end up working out well at the time, the concept sparked the imagination of inventors across the world! Within 60 years of the original roller skates’ appearance at a masquerade ball in London, skates similar to the ones we ride today were patented… and the rest is history!

Roller Skating Timeline

  • 1760 – John Joseph Merlin invented the first pair of roller skates. Unfortunately, he didn’t create a way to turn or stop and his invention took him crashing into a wall.
  • 1819 – Roller skates were patented for the first time.
  • 1863 – A skate that finally let people turn and skate around freely (not just in a straight line) was invented in Massachusetts.
  • 1880 – Roller skates were used by men to play “roller polo” which was similar to what we call roller hockey today!
  • 1970 – Skating took off as a fun pastime as roller rinks became more available and easier to maintain because of the use of modern plastic wheels.
  • 1985 – Skating for adults faded out with the era of Disco, but claimed a new following with children ages 5-15.
  • Present – Skating, both inline and traditional quad styles, has remained a family friendly, activity for kids and parents alike all over the world!

Roll in For Great Family Fun!

At Skate Moore, we’re keeping the tradition of roller skating alive! We offer excellent birthday party packages, open rink time, concessions and way more! If you want to find out more about our party packages, open skating times, or pricing, give us a call today at (405) 794-4644.

Roller Skating is Fun and Good For You!

September 28, 2017 by Writers Leave a Comment

speed skating

We all know roller skating is a ton of fun, but did you know that regular trips to the rink at Skate Moore in Oklahoma City can make a huge difference in your strength, fitness and overall health?

When you lace up your skates and get ready to glide across our massive hardwood roller rink, you know you’re in for a good time. But let’s talk about the other benefits of skating that you don’t often notice amidst the pure fun you’re having!

Improved Balance

Roller skating is an excellent way to improve your balance whether you’re a kid or adult. Skating takes coordination and balance to master. Plus, putting on skates adds about two inches to your height, which can make it seem a little scary at first, but will take your balance skills to the next level.

It’s a Workout!

Skating at a moderate pace for 30 minutes or more will get your blood pumping! Going around the rink will get your heart rate up into the 140 BPM range which will burn fat and increase lean muscle mass. Skating for an hour can actually burn up to 600 calories. Unlike other cardiovascular workouts, though, skating is actually good for your joints!

Find New Friends

Hanging out with us at our family-friendly skating center in Moore, Oklahoma, means you can have a great time with your old clique and open up opportunities to make great new ones! The roller rink is a great melting pot where you can expect to meet new people from all walks of life which help broaden your appreciation for all of your neighbors.

These are just a few examples of the really great benefits that come along with getting into skating. There are way more than what we’ve mentioned here, though. To find out what they are, roll by Skate Moore during our open skating hours and find out what it’s all about!

Keep Blisters from Ruining Your Skating Experience

September 21, 2017 by Writers Leave a Comment

blister band aid

When you think of roller skating with us at Skate Moore in Oklahoma City, you probably think about zipping around the rink, gliding fast around the curves and having endless hours of fun. You probably don’t give a lot of thought to blisters, though. However, developing blisters while you skate can happen and they can seriously ruin your day.

Fortunately, preventing painful blisters during your skating session is totally avoidable. You just have to follow a few simple tips and your day will be a fun-filled family adventure. Don’t get sidelined because of blisters on your feet. Instead, check out these helpful remedies to avoid blisters:

Size is Everything

One of the most common causes of skate blisters is having the wrong size skate. Skates that are too big allow a lot of movement between your feet and the skates. This can create rubbing and blisters will soon follow. Likewise, skates that are too small can trap your feet and even small shifts between your skates and your feet can create a painful blister to form.

Make sure your skates fit just right and lace them up well… not too loose and not too tight. At our pro shop, we can set you up with skates that are perfect for you.

Stop Blisters in their Tracks

If you feel a blister forming, there are ways to prevent them from getting worse and ruining your day at the roller rink. If you’re renting skates, talk to the pro shop attendant to see of your skates fit correctly. If not, trade them in for a size that’s better for your feet. Secondly, you can place a Band-Aid over the blister spot to add cushion and prevent further rubbing. Doubling up your socks can also work to add some extra cushion.

Have a Great Time!

Once you’ve sorted out the issues that can commonly cause blisters, it’s time to get out on the hard wood and have a great time! For more information about private parties, birthday bashes, open skating times and more, give Skate Moore a call today at (405) 794-4644.

New & Intermediate Skaters: Tips to Improve Your Skating Game

September 6, 2017 by Writers Leave a Comment

roller skatesSo, you’ve picked up your first pair of roller skates and are trying your skill around the rink. Or, maybe you’ve been skating for a while but want to improve your roller skating skills. Either way, the tips below are for both beginners and intermediate skaters. These tips will help you out-race your friends around the Skate Moore rink in no time!

Check out our hours of operation and prices, and come skate with us today!

Wear Protective Gear

Many people opt out of wearing protective roller skating gear because they don’t want to look silly. However, this gear can save you a trip to the emergency room and broken bones! It doesn’t matter if you’re new to roller skating or you’ve been roller skating for a while, falls can happen. To stay safe, wear a helmet, thick kneepads, elbow pads, and wrist guards.

Practice Indoors

Are you trying to roller skate for the first time? Or have you been roller skating for a while and there is a new move you want to try? Practice your new favorite activity indoors, specifically on carpet. The carpet provides traction for your wheels so it’s easier to skate on. If you fall while trying your new trick, the landing won’t hurt as much (especially if you are wearing your roller skating gear.)

Take Roller Skating Classes

Learn how to roller skate from a trained professional. Roller skating classes are great to learn the basics and receive tips on technique and style. When you’re at Skate Moore and have questions about roller skating, ask our staff. They can teach basic skating skills to anyone who needs help!

Roller skating in roller rink

A new school year is here and every family has a lot of things going on. Sometimes keeping your kids active once school starts back up slips to the bottom of the priority list. But keeping your child active after school has a ton of benefits physically, socially and mentally!

We all know that exercise is great for keeping your body healthy, but did you know that regular physical activity can help increase brain function in children, too? It’s true! And bringing your kids to the roller rink at Skate Moore after school is a great way for them to ramp up their exercise, make new friends and increase their energy for learning.

Benefits of Exercise for Your Childs Brain

There are now dozens of studies show that kids get smarter simply by staying active and getting regular exercise. Between 30 and 60 minutes of physical activity per day helps increase your child’s brain function in the following ways:

  • Increasing blood flow to the brain

  • Speeding up the brain’s metabolism
  • Increasing oxygen levels in the brain

Perk Up Your Next Party!

August 17, 2017 by Writers Leave a Comment

You already know that Skate Moore Skate Center is the best place for birthday parties in the Moore, OK area. If you want to really take your party to the next level, what about roller skating party favors?

The thing to remember about party favors is that they don’t have to be expensive to be awesome. Sure, you could spring for personalized skating socks for each and every guest, but clever puns, cute illustrations, and even delicious candy will also go a long way without costing as much. Create name tags or place cards shaped like roller skates and use round candy for the wheels–Rollos seem like the obvious choice based on their name (get it?), but Lifesavers are also a great choice. Just make sure that candy is individually wrapped before you glue or tape it, because kids are probably going to eat it. This is a great task for the guest of honor to help with! birthday cake

You can also put together inexpensive goodie bags for guests. Include fun things for kids to play with or wear include glow bracelets, silly glasses, fake mustaches, stickers, and anything else you can think of that kids will enjoy putting on their faces. Does your party have a theme, like the 80s or a favorite cartoon show? If so, your goodie bags are pretty much taken care of. Otherwise, consider picking a favorite color or movie. Most party stores have aisles divided by colors, characters, and other themes.

Again, don’t think you have to break the bank to throw a great birthday party. With a little bit of creativity and planning ahead, you can create fun, inexpensive party favors!
